Some blood pressure medications can cause swelling of the feet, while others can cause dangerous swelling of the tongue and lips.
Swelling of the feet and ankles (Peripheral edema) is very common with calcium channel blockers such as:
+ Amlodipine(pictured above)
+ Nifedipine( most people know this one)
Remember that class blocks the influx of calcium into cells. We said, magnesium pumps calcium out of the cell. This is why magnesium supplements relieve blood pressure and calcium supplements can expose you to hypertension.
These medicines relax blood vessels to lower pressure, but they also allow fluid to leak into tissues, especially around the ankles and feet.
About swelling of the tongue, lips or throat (Angioedema); This is a rare but potentially life threatening side effect
Commonly caused by Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.
