ON EPILEPSY;

  • Epilepsy is not “possessed by evil spirits”, it’s a brain condition.
  • Putting a spoon or mwiko in someone’s mouth during a seizure doesn’t save them. It can break their teeth or choke them.
    Simply ensure they are in a safe space so they cannot hurt their head.
  • Epilepsy is not contagious. You don’t ‘catch’ it by touching someone. Help those people.
  • Jumping over the urine they produce after muscle relaxation will NOT make you epileptic. Hii mashambani iko very common.
  • People with epilepsy are not abnormal, they can live normal lives. The problem is not the condition but the stigma you attach to it.
  • First aid in epilepsy doesn’t include pouring cold water, oil, or herbs on someone during a seizure. It won’t help. Simply ensure their safety.
  • A seizure doesn’t mean the person is dying.
    Don’t panic, be calm, protect and observe.
  • Stopping medication instantly because ‘they look fine now’ is how seizures come back. Trust medical advise from your doctor.
  • Not everything is for the camera. I know you have a good phone camera and storage. Keep it in your pocket.
